IN FOCUS: Mr Phil Mumford / CEO Queensland Motorways

Phil joined Queensland Motorways Limited as Chief Executive Officer in July 2004.

Phil is committed to delivering the highest level of customer service to the users of Queensland Motorways’ extensive road network and to being a leader in developing and operating high quality, free-flowing motorways that deliver value for money to customers. He has an extensive financial background, with substantial experience in both public and private sectors. Phil has held a number of senior management positions within the maritime industry, including key leadership roles as the Queensland State Manager for Towage and Salvage with AdSteam marine and 10 years as Chief Executive Officer with the Bundaberg Port Authority.

How did you get into your current position?

When the CEO position came up in 2004, I was approached. In my previous positions in the maritime industry I had an important role in managing the many stakeholders and understanding the customer base. I also forged a number of working relationships with Government sectors.

What have been your greatest challenges at Queensland Motorways?

Initially it was implementing a strong governance framework as I have always been a firm believer in quality systems and structured procedures.

Obviously the Gateway Upgrade and Free-Flow Tolling projects, from the tendering process right through to construction and systems implementation, have been quite challenging. For myself, and most of the people involved, they are ‘once in a lifetime’ projects.

What do you enjoy most about the job?

Clearly the most enjoyable part of my job is working with Queensland Motorways’ employees on world class projects, such as the Gateway Upgrade Project and Free-Flow Tolling Project.

What has been your most significant achievement in your time at Queensland Motorways?

Delivery of the Gateway Upgrade Project and Free-Flow Tolling Project will ultimately stand as a real lifetime achievements. However, these would not have been possible without the specialist teams we have assembled, including our project partners. In implementing our new tolling system, we have the capacity to introduce intelligent transportation options in the future, which will provide more information and services to our customers.

Outside of your working life, what do you do to relax?

Despite being born and bred on the land in southern New South Wales, my time in the maritime industry forged a love of the sea and boating has become my greatest passion and means of relaxation. I have a boat up at Bribie Island and try to get up there with my family as much as possible.
